Hey #guitar people, does anyone have experience with the Squier Contemp Tele? Questions are, is it heavy? Does it offer variety in tones? Is the quality okay (for the price)? Would you recommend it?

I just published my first Substack piece about the Colorado Springs gunman’s history of domestic violence — part of a clear pattern linking violent misogyny to mass shootings. Two-thirds of mass shootings are linked to DV, and we’re still ignoring it.

I also talk about the merging of extremist movements and the heteropatriarchy that links them together.

I can say this here, because we’re friends: Kickstarters make me so nervous. I know we have plenty of time but this slow period in the middle is maddening. Feel free to put me out of my misery

There is an episode of BBS The Documentary from @textfiles that is about FidoNet, which was... almost, kind of, like an early federated forum thing (basically it let people on BBS server 1 could talk to people on BBS server 2). The tech details don't line up exactly but I was struck watching it a few years ago at how the social dynamics of admins of different BBSes mapped pretty perfectly onto fediverse admins.

Anyway if you want to feel like time is a flat circle:

everyone’s always amped for Mariah’s All I Want for Christmas is You but no one wants to talk about the foot-tapping power of Paul Simon’s Getting Ready for Christmas Day and that hurts me, a dad

Understanding #Mastodon gets easier once you get the basic idea that federation between servers can be understood as homeomorphisms across hyperplanes between the Riemannian manifolds of toots, whereas the servers represent countable finite sets of discrete entities.

Figuring out which Mastodon server to join is akin to IRL for Black, Indigenous, People of Global Majority (BIPGM) women/femme:
Are they safe for us? Will I need to assimilate? Do I need to code-switch?
Will they care more about the dominant comfort & civility than the truth?

Since being on mastodon, as I slowly move out of the bird app, I have found that I’m missing the #indigenous and #Navajo community that made it difficult for me to decide to leave Twitter.

Absolutely mastodon has a more positive and welcoming environment here, which I’m loving. But Im in search of #indigenous and other #bipoc accounts.

Anyone know how to get Google to stop automatically rejecting emails from an instance?

Not considered unsafe via Safe Browsing. PTR record points to the right place. SPF and DKIM are setup. It's not an open relay. I added it as one of my domains in Google's Postmaster Tools.

Nothing i've done, even responded to an email sent to me from gmail, has gotten it past instant rejection.

Our system has detected that this message is 550-5.7.1 likely unsolicited mail.

#Artemis I is at the Moon!

Just a few hours ago, it completed a flyby of the #Moon, coming within 130 km of the surface.

During the flyby, it completed an outbound powered flyby burn to enter a distant retrograde orbit that will carry it to 431,000 km away from Earth.

It will be making a second distant retrograde orbit insertion burn later today to place it in its new trajectory.

#NASA has a press conference later today to tell us how it all went.

Let's test uploads.

Got this message while upgrading. Admittedly, it's not very helpful.

New system for this instance is humming right along. Feels snappier.

This story with Tracy Chou, an engineer who specifically works on creating tools to stifle organised harassment online, getting kicked off of because of "reverse sexism/racism," is maddeningly infuriating.

We know that Mastodon's flagship instances have been having issues with moderation for a while, but this seems to point that the trend has gone from "ineffective absent moderators" to "moderators protecting the feelings of white men," which I think will backfire. It also validates every criticism the fediverse receives for being a bastion of tepid, neoliberal, unexamined racism-as-reflex whiteness.

Link to Twitter:

To echo Tracy Chou's bannable offense: I also heavily recommend reading more books by non men, by non white people, and by non cisheterosexual people. What a violent ideology! Tabarnouche. :blobcatreeeeeee:

Incidentally, I try not to boast too much, but I wanted to share that as of this week, this year is my all-time best year for scientific citations. 533 papers have cited my work so far, up from last year's best of 530.

Just signed the first copy of my #book, headed overseas to two of my wonderful, patient, kind sources. Giving away all my comp copies to the many, many sources who took the time to teach me. NOW it feels real. *sniff*

Below the thunders of the upper deep,
Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous and secret cell
Unnumber'd and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the lumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge sea-worms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.
— "The Kraken" by Alfred Lord Tennyson, 1830
